About consumer units

A modern consumer unit is the heart of a safe home

Your consumer unit, the fuse board, is the control centre for every circuit in the house.

It is what detects a fault and cuts the power before it can cause a shock or a fire. Older boards with rewireable fuses or a single trip cannot react the way a modern one does, and plastic boards have been superseded by metal-clad units under the 18th Edition wiring regulations. Upgrading is one of the most worthwhile safety improvements you can make to a Worcester home.

Phase Electrics fits modern consumer units with individual RCBOs, so a fault on one circuit trips only that circuit and leaves the rest of your home powered. We add SPD surge protection to guard sensitive electronics, label everything clearly, and test the whole installation before we hand it back. The changeover is usually completed within a day, with the power off for the shortest time possible.

When it is worth upgrading your board

A new consumer unit is often the right first step before other work. Adding an EV charger, an extension or an electric shower all rely on the board doing its job. Consider an upgrade if:

At a glance

  • You still have rewireable fuses or no RCD protection
  • The board is plastic, rusty or shows signs of scorching
  • Circuits trip often, or one trip cuts the whole house
  • You are adding an EV charger, extension or electric shower
  • An EICR has flagged the board as needing attention

Fuse Boards FAQs

Common fuse board questions

It depends on the number of circuits and whether any faults need putting right before the new board goes on. We always quote a fixed price after checking your installation.

An RCBO protects each circuit individually against overloads and earth faults. On a modern board it means a fault on one circuit won't cut power to your whole home, much safer and more convenient.

A Surge Protection Device guards your wiring and appliances against voltage spikes (for example from lightning or the grid). It's now recommended under the 18th Edition and we can include it in your upgrade.

Most consumer unit upgrades are completed within a day, including the testing and certification.
